Welcome to Great Windows.ca
we’re a Markham based custom window and door installation company that has been servicing the area for over 20 years.
We offer custom replacement windows and replacement doors. And if you have any special requests such as changing a window to a bay window or a bow window or adding sidelights to your front door , we have the skilled tradespeople working for us that can do the necessary build out
So why get your Replacement Windows and Doors from GreatWindows.ca?
The first question is why we’re called Great Windows. It’s quite simple really, we take the science out of buying windows and doors. Just because the window is filled with argon, made of virgin vinyl not recycled vinyl, has vinyl spacers, not aluminum, low-E, high-R, we’re not sure that you care. Actually, we are sure that you don’t care.
That said, didn’t seem to have the same appeal as www.greatwindows.ca.
If you’re kind enough to allow us to quote, we’ll explain it all if you want us to and show you the best way to measure. And here’s a little clue, it’s none of the above. All medium to high end windows and replacement doors have those features.
We can’t bring a sample window to your house and ask you to admire the window filled to 92% with argon, you can’t see it. If you could, it wouldn’t be much of a window. By the same token, windows offering a low E coating have a hair thin coating to them, the whole point of a glass window is to see through it. And we’re definitely not bringing half a door to your house so you can see what’s in the middle!
Let’s face it, no matter who does the windows replacement or instals the doors, we all know that it comes down to two things; do you trust and like us and are our prices competitive.
We try to take the complexity out of buying replacement windows and replacement doors, as we just said, we won’t blind you with science about the window manufacturing or installation process, we will happily answer all of the questions that you have so we’ll tell you what you want to know, not what we think you should know.
You’ll receive a fully itemized quote that is customer friendly so that you know how much each window replacement will cost you. If we are installing a different type of window or door and additional construction work is required (for example, a sidelight for your replacement door or a build out for a new bay window) then we will detail the cost of the window and the cost of the construction.
When you buy new doors and windows from us we want you to enjoy those replacement doors and windows. We’re not one of those window installation companies that will drive the pleasure out of your new windows and new doors before you even get them installed.
The customer is the reason that we exist, windows replacement just like all home renovation is a sizeable investment, we believe that it is our job to make sure that you enjoy that investment.
And you can rely on us, trust us and be sure of the best job possible. We’re a local company, our kids go to school in Markham, we dine out in Markham, we shop in Markham, we want you to say hello to us in the grocery store, not throw eggs at us!
Types of windows and doors
Obviously, we can advise you on what type of window you may want or need but here’s a little primer on the types of windows that are available.
Hung Windows – either double hung or single hung. Can you guess which is which?
Casement windows – Fixed casement or picture windows
Bay windows – typically a three window set up with two casements on either side coming out from the house at 30-40 degree angles with a fixed casement or picture frame across the largest area.
Bow windows – usually four to five frames at smaller angles, smaller windows to give that appearance of a bow.
Patio doors – Come in two types, sliding or hinged. Sliding doors are sometimes called gliders which is very often wishful thinking if dirt gets caught in the track. They are, however, an extremely cost effective solution. Hinged patio doors are hinged in the middle at what is called the mullion. French doors are hinged at the side and meet in the middle, they latch on to each other so that there is no central mullion.
The Science behind the windows – or rather, in them.
Obviously, there are certain things that you will want to know about all windows and we know, some of the terminology can be a bit daunting. Read on to get a primer on some of the gobbledegook that you may well hear or read. We’ll do our best when you meet us to ensure that we don’t use any one of these terms more than once!
Low-E windows – Wikipedia refers to low-E as low emissivity or low thermal emissivity, a surface condition that emits low levels of radiant thermal (heat) energy. Or to put it another way, the windows let less heat from sunlight in. See what we mean, it doesn’t have to be difficult.
High-R windows – OK, let’s have fun, as Canada has gone metric we should refer to it as the RSI value not the R value. The R value of a window is a measure of its thermal resistance, ie how good an insulator it is. Our windows are pretty much the same as any other mid to high quality window. The secret is to install the replacement door or replacement window properly. Improper installation can potentially give you all kinds of leaks for heat to escape or enter when it’s not wanted.
Eco friendly windows – Some of the most expensive replacement custom windows and doors available in the GTA are proclaimed as eco-friendly and have been manufactured in Europe. The carbon footprint of importation is massive, unless of course the windows were put on a sailing ship! Some window manufacturers may use recycled vinyl, ours don’t. Windows are subject to massive temperature variations between summer and window, recycled vinyl is just not as hardy as virgin vinyl. Added to which, our windows are manufactured in the GTA.
So What Are the Key Things to Look for In Replacement windows and Doors?
A lot is made of the energy efficiency of replacement windows and yet this is a bigger question than it seems at first glance. It also opens a can of worms on the other things to consider when looking at window and door replacement.
So here’s a quick buying guide on what you should look at.
Vinyl replacement windows?
Or wood? Or….? Or….? In Southern Ontario vinyl is generally the most sensible and cost effective solution. Wood windows generally don’t hold up as well , for that reason we only offer high end wood replacement windows and generally only as casement windows, that way we can be more certain of the quality and durability. Think about it, a more or less 60 degree shift in temperature is never good for any construction.
We also only use manufacturers that use virgin vinyl, not recycled. While we are very conscious of the environment, the reality is that doors and windows with a higher recycled content tend to be more brittle.
Vinyl replacement windows are tested for their energy efficiency and assigned an R-value which measures their thermal resistance or insulating capacity. Most medium to high end vinyl replacement windows have an Energy Star rating so it’s non issue when you want to buy the actual replacement windows and doors. I’d love to say our vinyl replacement windows are better than the competitors’ doors and windows, they’re probably not, just the same in terms of energy efficiency.
So what is different?
Funny you should ask. Think about it, you’ve got your window and door replacement all lined up and the installation is shoddy. Shoddy installation results in air leaks around the replacement windows and doors and unfortunately, it’s really easy to tell after the fact by holding a naked flame close to the window edge to see if it flickers. Like I said, the trouble is that the window and door replacement has just finished.
Increasingly, doors and windows need to look spectacular from the curb. House prices in York Region continue to skyrocket and even if you’re not moving, you need to be in a place that looks like it’s worth the ridiculous amount of money that your neighbours are asking. Windows truly are picture frames to the outside but they also add a lot to curb appeal. Old windows look old because of the frames, vinyl replacement windows are typically white and really add a sharp look to the house.
Which reminds me. Think hard about whether you want brick to brick or frame to frame installation. Frame to frame is cheaper but the windows look smaller. I was driving by a house that had a frame to frame installation done in brown vinyl, the windows looked new….and awful. Big and brown frames.
The Sales Person
When we come round to your house to quote on your vinyl replacement windows, we act as consultants. We have the expertise in wider home renovation that we make sure that we sell you the solution that fits your budget as well as your aesthetic. Replacement windows and doors need to complement the overall look of the house and quite honestly, our view is that if the doors and windows get in the way of the look, they should not have been installed.
We don’t need to make the sale. In fact, we turn down window and door replacement jobs. We don’t sell low end windows and we won’t quote low to get a window and door replacement job. We’ll install doors and windows cost effectively, we won’t do it cheap though.
